When it’s time to start house shopping, print this checklist and do these things for each house or neighborhood. This will ensure you are happy with your purchase for many years to come.

  • Carry your loan officer’s contact info with you at all times
  • Visit builders’ neighborhoods and communities
  • Visit model homes at each community and tour the floor plans
  • Walk through unfurnished ready to move in homes
  • Go meet the neighbors
  • Review and ask about electricity and water bills
  • Drive your school and work traffic patterns at what will be your normal commute times
  • Meet the staff and principal of your local school if you have school-aged kids
  • Drive around to see where you would grocery shop
  • Explore the parks and local recreation sites
  • Go find out where all the good local restaurants are
  • Map out the time it takes to get to the closest hospital
  • Check with your health insurance for local physicians that will take your insurance
  • Contact local community on pet rules, regulations and leash laws
  • Contact your auto insurance for a quote in that area
  • Get home owner’s insurance quote for the price range you are approved for in that area
  • Find out what the property tax rates are
